I like photos of movie stars and scenes from movies of the 1930s, 40s & 50s, but also photos of more ‘ordinary’ people and situations from that time.

I used to post vintage physique/beefcake photos from the same period, but I’ve posted hundreds of them & have little interest in posting any more (and I can’t find many good ones that I haven’t already posted). If you came here looking for that type of material, the 2010 Archive is where you’ll find it.

NOTE: Obviously, I don’t have the copyright to any of these photos. They’re just what I find on the internet and on the Tumblr dashboard. I’ll always credit the photographer or the studio and give the source if I have that information.

We Had Faces Then

Gaby Rogers in Kiss Me Deadly (Robert Aldrich, 1955)

Gaby Rogers in Kiss Me Deadly (Robert Aldrich, 1955)

Ray Milland, 1930s

Ray Milland, 1930s

Frederic Prokosch, 1938, photo by George Platt Lynes

“In a career of extraordinary range and depth, Jimmy Stewart has come to embody on the screen the very image of the typical American. Whether flying the ocean as Charles Lindbergh, going to Washington as Senator Jefferson Smith, or playing an ordinary man who somehow never got around to leaving his home town, Stewart has captured the essence of American hopes, doubts, and aspirations. His idealism, his determination, his vulnerability, and above all, his basic decency shine through every role he plays…..”
